Unraveling the mind of the artist has been for centuries the goal of philosophers, artists and scientists. Often, artists were taken to be geniuses, but more often than not, they were compared to mad men. This still unsolved mystery is at the heart of "The Patient Artist". Our four chapter mini-series is an innovative voyage into creativity and genius, that will explore artistic and creative processes from the perspectives of neuropsychology, psychiatry and art.

In "The Patient Artist" we will cross the thin membrane that separates genius from madness in order to better understand the motivations, circumstances and complex relationships between the artist and his/her work during the creative process.

Similarities between creative forces and madness are not arbitrary. Both worlds are so closely related that genius has often been considered a synonym of madness. During the normal creative process, the artist steps out of his inner world in order to externalize his/her art. In the case of the mentally ill artist, this step happens more violently and can take roughly two forms according to two psychiatric profiles: the melancholic and the psychotic.

Unveiling the mental processes that share and differentiate the sane and the insane artists is our target; we will study the logic behind creativity, analyzing the power of the creative force; we will venture out into psychopathological art and we will discover why a brilliant creativity seem to linger on the edge of reason and madness.

Recent progress in neuroimaging and other neuropsychological technologies allow us today to step closer into the intricacies of the creative process. "The Patient Artist" will attempt for the first time to unite the views of both scientists and artists in order to discover the world of creative expression and genius.
