Evolution

From visionary filmmakers Julio Soto Gúrpide (Deep, Inspector Sun) and Zayra Muñoz Domínguez comes Evolution, a fast-paced, hilarious, and heart-warming animated adventure about what happens when the line between humans and animals gets delightfully blurred.

When a mysterious alien substance accidentally fuses Zoe’s DNA with that of her beloved exotic pets, chaos erupts — and so does the fun. Suddenly, humans begin turning into animals, animals start acting human, and the entire world is thrown into comic disarray. To restore balance (and sanity), Zoe and her unlikely team of shape-shifting companions must learn to understand each other and work together before nature — and evolution — spin completely out of control.

Filled with colorful characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and an uplifting message about empathy and coexistence, Evolution turns a wild scientific mishap into an unforgettable family adventure about connection, curiosity, and what truly makes us human.

Directed by Julio Soto Gúrpide and Zayra Muñoz Domínguez, Evolution is written by Miguel Morán and Adela Gutiérrez, from an original story by Julio Soto Gúrpide and José Tatay. Produced by Adriana Malfatti Chen and Eneko Gutiérrez Sola, with executive production by Adriana Malfatti Chen.

The Characters

Zoe

12-year old Zoe is at that lanky, awkward age, though she still manages to come off as sure of herself and unafraid to stand up for herself or her animal friends. Animals are the closest family she has as she has distanced herself from her hopelessly busy and distracted dad and mom.

But when she accidentally ingests an alien substance, she becomes quite literally a twofold character: normal and feral. She is able to absorb the DNA of any animal she comes into contact with, acquiring “super powers”. But with the power, there is a curse.

Peggy

This brilliant, compulsive-obsessive scientist is, much to her chagrin, the mother of a wild teenager. Her unsuccessful attempts to reconcile her professional life with the demanding job of mothering will trigger a chain of events that puts Zoe's life at serious risk. Peggy will have to work against the clock to save her daughter from the harmful effects of the alien substance and T.J.'s evil plans. But the real question is: will her maternal love triumph over all things?

Gordon

Gordon is a successful, funny, and carefree individual, which also makes him a terrible and neglectful father for Zoe. But his high status and lifestyle—the result of a 90s technological invention of dubious origin—will soon come to an end.

T.J, his megalomaniac boss, will give him an ultimatum: he will either find a new invention or be fired. But as Gordon's world collapses and dark times come, he will find in Zoe and her “humanimals” the key to regaining his status. Or… maybe not?

Rufus

Rufus is Zoe's best friend. Think about Rufus as the Snoop Dog of rabbits. He is an adorable giant bunny who evolves into a loud and rambunctious humanized rabbit. He’s not the sharpest pencil in the box, though he will later learn how to drive a recently stolen police car on two wheels without even ruffling his big ears. Rufus is gifted with a keen nose for getting into big trouble, but also with an enormous heart and his priority in life is always taking care of his beloved Zoe.

Womby

Womby – a plump Australian 'Wombat' – in his humanized form, is a true, lazy 'bon vivant.' What he likes most is lounging next to a big bowl of nachos without anyone or anything bothering him. His attire usually consists of a comfortable housecoat. He doesn't like being rushed, especially when in trouble. When feeling threatened, he has the peculiarity of producing perfectly cubic poops.

Blinky

Blinky is a 'slow loris' that has evolved to become a furry nerd. Endowed with an incredible capacity for technology, Blinky can unravel any electronic device without even needing user manuals. Climbing on any surface and performing the most incredible acrobatics are her most notable physical skills. Zoe will borrow these skills, putting them to good use.

Kyle

Determined to save our mistreated planet, Kyle is that slightly weird, over‐eager kid in your school who has a problem picking up on social cues. However, he is also a candid soul who trusts one hundred percent in the natural goodness of his fellow men, often getting him into trouble. His quirkiness can make his interactions with Zoe, on whom he has a crush, rather awkward. He is hopelessly attracted to Zoe's wild side, even before she turns feral. Later on, he will prove to be a courageous ally in defeating T.J.

Tj

A difficult childhood is not enough of an excuse to be so, so bad. His unscrupulous narcissism is only surpassed by his excessive ambition. T.J. is also extremely sensitive to his own popularity on social networks, which he manages masterfully.

Heir to an empire that he transformed into a multibillion-dollar biotechnological corporation, he will soon discover through Zoe, her 'humanimals,' and his outdated employee Gordon, the key to world domination.

Donna

A rebel with an overwhelming personality and a dazzling sense of fashion? That is without a doubt the definition of Donna. The school’s bad girl by her own merit. She’s repeated the year six times, but no one can chew gum like her. It’s impossible for a 12-year-old girl like Zoe not to be completely dazzled by her. Her wild side will immediately connect with her. The problem is that this strange friendship is going to bring our protagonist many, many problems…

Robert

Probably the most rational being we can find in this comedy of errors. His worn-out battery tends to make him indulge in long periods of blissful sleep, as his attention span is limited, especially when Peggy tries to keep him focused on one of her long scientific explanations.

A heroic and solitary discoverer of the alien fruit tree in some remote and unexplored point in the Arctic, Robert's sensitive circuits will witness the most beastly evolution that a thinking being could contemplate.
